What’s Happening Now

Soon it was time for Sarah to graduate and move on to make her dream of being a pediatric nurse a reality. Someday she could see herself as a registered nurse and maybe even a hospital administrator. Sarah was the type of young lady who loved to help people, so she figured nursing would be a great job. Also, she loved children so she wanted to do something that would change a child’s life. She felt that being able to help children and give them some direction would fill her with joy.

Finally the big night came and Sarah’s mom, dad, and all of Sarah’s family were there. Some family members came from miles away just to see her receive her diploma. Even the preacher from their church came. He had been Sarah’s pastor since she was a baby, and he had baptized her. The pastor and his wife had always treated her like one of the family. Many Sundays Sarah’s Mom would cook up a big dinner and invite the whole family over.

Sarah held her breath. It was almost time for them to call “Sarah Martin,” and when they finally did, her heart was beating so fast she could hardly breathe. She quickly walked up to the podium, a huge smile on her face. Her mom and dad were sitting where Sarah could see them and other members of her family. Even old Uncle Jack came to congratulate her.

After it was over, one of the classmates held a big party. Of course, Alicia was going with Lance. Sarah wanted to go because she thought that Evan just might be there. She had not spoken to Evan in months but he called her mom from time to time just to see how she was doing. Her mom and dad seemed to really like Evan. Sarah heard them say that they thought he was a very handsome, intelligent, and caring young man. Sarah’s dad told her he felt Evan really cared for her. Sarah gave her parents a vague excuse for not seeing him anymore. They told her it was her decision.

“Do what is best for you,” they said. She still cared for Evan and felt in her heart that he still wanted to be with her as well, but right now just wasn’t the time for that. Sarah let her mom and dad know about the gathering after the graduation ceremony. They agreed, so Sarah went there with Alicia and Lance. She sat and talked to some of her classmates. Of course there was alcohol being served so she took a small drink. Suddenly, Sarah felt someone tap her on the shoulder.

She turned around and asked Ted, “What do you want?”

He said, “Sarah, I heard about the little gathering for the high schoolers and thought I’d stop by.”

Sarah said, “You could have stayed where you were.”

Ted said, “And by the way, Sarah. You’re coming to work tomorrow, right?”

She said, “I don’t know. I’ve got some things I want to do.
